Project Media is a book for project-based learning in media studies. Project Media promotes learning through doing. Instructive text is kept to a minimum and limited to key terms, detailed definitions, and background/context needed to complete a project. Student knowledge is activated and constructed through the use of questions and group discussion. Each media project represents an essential idea in media studies and brings together multiple outcomes for the benefit of both teacher and student.

Project Media comprises a student text with twelve major media projects; a consumable workbook of line masters and assessment tools; and an accompanying teacher's resource that includes suggested teaching strategies, lesson plans, line masters and assessment rubrics.

  • Choice: Project Media offers 12 major self-standing projects in media studies, along with detailed instructions and visual exemplars, plus select profiles and career-related features. The student book is intended to be used independently by students.
  • Structured: A workbook of line masters and assessment tools help scaffold each project and steer the student through to completion. The workbook has perforated sheets so that teachers can collect student organizers at the end of the project and use them for assessment purposes.
  • Modelling: Each media project represents an essential idea in media studies and brings together multiple outcomes, which are itemized for the student at the start of the lesson. In advance of each project, students analyze a media text similar to the one they will design. This interpretive piece is included in the project description and assists students in exploring the principles that will be applied in the creation of media.
  • Flexible: Each project offers both high-tech and low-tech alternatives ranging from paper and glue to Internet research and graphics editing software. Computers in the classroom are not a must-have.
